Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States, was the son of Abraham Van Buren (–) and Maria Hoes (or Goes) Van Alen (–).[1]

Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, New York on December 5, [2] His father Abraham Van Buren (–) owned and operated an inn and tavern.
He was a Patriot during the American Revolution, and served as a captain in the Albany County Militia's 7th Regiment.[3][4] He later joined the Jeffersonian Republicans,[5] became active in local politics and government, and served as Kinderhook's town clerk from to [6]
